How to Fill a Money Order?

A money order is a convenient money transfer instrument to send money to your loved ones. You can buy money order at any post office or bank or even at convenience store. Thus, making it one of the popular methods used for sending money to your dependants.

These are the steps to follow while filling a money order.

Step1 – First find out the field “Payee”, “Pay to” or “Pay to the order”. This is where you will write the name of person or establishment to whom you are paying money. If there is no other field specified for identification information, you will write it in the same space. Mention your account number with that company. Or you can write any other identifying information.

If money order with blank “payee” is lost, then anybody can cash it. So filling this field without delay is important.

Step2 – The next step is writing your name. There will be a field labeled as “Sender”, “Purchaser”, “From” or “Remitter”. Write your name along with some identifying information.

Step3 – Write your address in the field “Purchaser’s address”. Some money orders require the address of the money order beneficiary or some do not require it. If only one address is asked, write only your address.

Step4 – Next important step is signing your money order. There will be a place saying “Purchaser’s signature”, “Purchaser, Signer for Drawer” or just “Signature”. It will be on the first page only. Generally the back of the money order is for payee or receiver’s signature. So never sign on back page.

Step5 – If your money order has field like “Re:”, “C.O.D. number”, “Memo” or “Used for” fill this space with the identifying information like your account number with the company or the purpose of sending money. Some money orders do not provide this space.

Step6 – The money order always have some section that you can detach from it. Otherwise it has a carbon copy below it. This is a receipt for you. Always retain this receipt. It will be helpful in cases like the money order is lost or the receiver refuses of receiving it. Also you can trace the status of your money order from the tracking number mentioned on the receipt. Without receipt, you will not be able to collect the refund if the money order is lost.

If you make any error while filling the money order, then you can give it back from where you have purchased it. You can take another money order or can ask for refund also.
